Director Todd Stephens Reflects on the Raunchy 2000s Comedy Era in Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild!

Director Todd Stephens is revisiting one of his most outrageous cult comedies nearly two decades after its original release. In a new interview with the Los Angeles Blade, Stephens reflects on the legacy of Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild! and the unapologetically raunchy comedy era that helped define early-2000s queer cinema.

In the interview, Stephens reflects on why films like Another Gay Movie and Another Gay Sequel stood out at the time. Rather than focusing on coming-out struggles, he wanted to make comedies where queer characters were already out and living their lives — with the same messy, ridiculous adventures seen in mainstream teen comedies.

“I made films primarily for the queer community so we could laugh at ourselves,” Stephens said, explaining that much of the LGBTQ cinema of the early 2000s leaned heavily into drama rather than humor.

Nearly 20 years later, the film’s irreverent spirit and over-the-top humor continue to resonate with audiences discovering it for the first time.
