Dark Distortion Director Joseph Herrera Talks Influencer Culture and Queer Representation

Joseph Herrera is leveling up his filmmaking career with his feature directorial debut, Dark Distortion, now distributed by Breaking Glass Pictures. Read his full interview with Dallas Voice here.

The crime-horror thriller explores influencer culture through a supernatural lens. When a group of young influencers cons the wrong client, their glamorous schemes spiral into a terrifying fight for survival.

Herrera, who also wrote and stars in the film, emphasizes authentic queer storytelling without making sexuality the centerpiece. “I want queer characters to just exist normally within the story,” Herrera says. The cast includes local Dallas talent like content creator Larry the Fairy and Marcos Garcia from The Round-Up Saloon, ensuring authentic representation.

With nods to the aesthetic of films like Spring Breakers, Dark Distortion blends sexy, modern-day intrigue with horror-thriller suspense. “If you’re going to do something, here are the consequences,” Herrera explains — a cautionary tale for the influencer age.
